Mission 62 - Satellite Photos & Other Imagery
Operation Red Dawn

A desolate, dusty town on the Tigris River, Adwar is patrolled so often by US soldiers they call the road leading into the area "RPG Alley" for the rocket-propelled grenades the guerrillas often greet them with. The large farm where Saddam Hussein was found is less than 10 miles from Tikrit, his ancestral home, and where his luxurious palace complex-now transformed into the 4th Infantry Division headquarters- still stands.

The remote village surrounded by orange, lemon and palm groves. Close to target areas Wolverine One and Wolverine Two is a row of houses and a large electricity plant. The setting surrounding the farm includes a light tan field that forms the base of a green-lighted mosque minaret seen in the distance.

Undoubtedly, Saddam Hussein's hideout would be easy to miss without precise Intel. Largely unremarkable compared to hundreds of other remote homes scattered around the central Iraqi landscape, the region of his capture includes a farmhouse, a chicken coop and a single cow's stable, and a cramped, two-room hut.

The hut served as Saddam's home, a rudimentary mud and brick lean-to capped by a crude metal roof. Written on the front wall of the house, just above the bedroom door, is an Arabic phrase, the translation of which reads, "In the name of Allah, most merciful and most gracious."

There is no bathroom inside the humble home. There is an 8-by-20-foot bedroom where US soldiers find $750,000 in $100 bills. Dirty clothes, books, picture frames and other personal items-including two packages of boxer-style underwear and a package of Lanvin socks-are noted amid the cluttered mess.

Saddam's kitchen is dirty, and it appears he hasn't been eating well. There are Mars chocolate bars, six packages of insect repellent, canned meats, bananas, apples, tangerines and kiwi fruit. Much of the fruit, however, is spoiled. Old bread and leftover rice litter the counter. There is 7-Up, hotdogs and Bounty candy bars inside the fridge.

Outside, there is a cooking area and a small patio beneath a slanted tin roof. There is trash scattered all around the property, and a portion of the overgrown yard is used as a makeshift latrine. Not far from there is a tin exhaust pipe, loosely camouflaged by drying salamis and figs. Troops later discover the pipe is used to provide air to the spider hole.

The hole where Saddam was found was clearly for emergencies only. The bottom is shaped like a tomb and there is just enough room to lie down. The ventilation pipe prevents suffocation, and a small florescent light illuminates what is little more than a crawl space, but it is a tight squeeze. Saddam had just 6-8 feet of depth and enough width to wedge himself in.
