Woman Claims to be Strom Thurmond's Illegitimate Daughter
A 78-year-old retired schoolteacher claims she is the illegitimate daughter of the late Sen. Strom Thurmond. The woman, Essie Mae Washington-Williams, had long been rumored to be the mixed-race daughter of the one-time segregationist. Thurmond died earlier this year at the age of 100. According to Williams's attorney, she is coming forward now at the urging of her children. Williams claims Thurmond privately acknowledged her as his daughter and provided financial support to her for more than six decades. Thurmond was the oldest and longest-serving senator in the US, an active politician for seventy years.
Earthquake Kills Thousands in Iran
A major earthquake registering 6.5 on the Richter scale hit the south-eastern province of Kerman, Iran. 43,000 people were killed in the ancient city of Bam alone, where 30,000 people are estimated injured and 75,000 left homeless. The Iranian Red Cross Society (IRCS) has mobilized more than 8,500 relief workers and volunteers into the area, where a large-scale rescue, evacuation and relief operation is now underway.
New Rules Announced for FBI Intel
New FBI ground rules have been established in an effort to change the way investigators handle counterterrorism cases. The new guidelines allow criminal and intelligence agents to work side by side, sharing intelligence access and tools for gathering Intel for the first time in decades. The hope is that the FBI will be unrestricted in its ability to conduct more searches and wiretaps than in the years past. The new strategy is credited by the FBI in helping disrupt plans for at least four terrorist attacks overseas and uncover a terrorist sleeper cell in the United States. The new rules have also caused a notable surge in new counterterrorism investigations, according to officials.
National Guard Joins Search for Missing Co-Ed
National Guard troops from two states have joined the search for missing University of North Dakota student, Dru Sjodin. Driving Humvees through snow-covered fields and searching the Red River with underwater cameras, about 300 Guard members from North Dakota and Minnesota joined state and local law enforcement officers in an 800 square mile manhunt for the 22-year-old woman. Sjodin was last heard from on Nov. 22 as she spoke to her boyfriend by cell phone from the parking lot of Grand Forks' Columbia Mall. Alfonso Rodriguez Jr., 50, a convicted rapist released from prison in May, has been charged with her kidnapping. He remains jailed in Grand Forks on $5 million bond.
Halliburton Overcharges Disclosed by the Pentagon
A Pentagon audit reveals that Vice President Dick Cheney's former company, Halliburton, may have overcharged the Army by $1.09 per gallon for nearly 57 million gallons of gas delivered to citizens in Iraq. The auditors found potential overcharges of up to $61 million for gasoline that a Halliburton subsidiary delivered as part of its no-bid contract to help rebuild Iraq's oil industry. Halliburton officials stress the company didn't profit from the charges, but believe the company paid subcontractors in Kuwait too much for the gasoline from the start.
US Troops in Afghanistan Launch 'Operation Avalanche'
The US military launched the biggest operation against the Taliban in Afghanistan in two years. "Operation Avalanche" has netted US authorities a huge cache of weapons, including hundreds of rockets, mortars, rocket-propelled grenades, anti-tank and anti-personnel mines, and several howitzers. The operation includes 11,000 US troops and focuses on areas of eastern and southern Afghanistan where international troops and aid workers have been repeatedly attacked by terrorist cells.
