Mission 62 - Chronology
Operation Red Dawn

  • December 13, 2003:

    10:50 a.m.
U.S. military officials receive information from a bodyguard that his ex-boss, Saddam Hussein, may be hiding in one of two locations near the town of Adwar. The target locations are from then on identified as "Wolverine 1" and "Wolverine 2."

    6:00 p.m.
Some 600 artillery, cavalry and special operations forces take position in the dark. Movement begins toward the two target areas.

    8:00 p.m.
Humvees pulled up to the locations, where neighbors report the electricity has been cut off. The soldiers quickly seal off two square kilometers and sweep into Wolverine 1 and Wolverine 2.

Coalition forces do not initially find the target.

The 1st Brigade Combat Team begins an intensive search, and soon, troops discover a suspicious location to the northwest of Wolverine 2. Two men are caught fleeing the premises.

Soldiers enter a small mud-brick hut located close to Wolverine 2. Finding no one in the home, troops prepare to leave. Just outside, one soldier spots a suspicious white rug.

    8:26 p.m.
Soldiers remove the rug and a block of Styrofoam underneath. They find Saddam Hussein hiding beneath, in an underground crawl space described as a "spider hole."

Saddam Hussein is captured without incident.

    9:15 p.m.
Hussein is moved to a secure area while soldiers search his hideout and the surrounding premises.

In the end, soldiers confiscate approximately $750,000 in $100 bills, two AK-47s, a pistol and an orange and white taxi.
