US Troops Launch Attack on al Qaeda
US forces in Baghdad launched the biggest offensive so far this year against al Qaeda fighters by sending 2,500 troops in and around the western Iraqi village of Haditha. Operation River Gate is a massive offensive intended to stop al Qaeda operating in the city and neighboring villages. Despite frequent raids and offensive operations, towns along the Euphrates River continue to be infiltrated by Taliban and al Qaeda operatives in their bid to set up local command centers.
Death Toll Mounts in Pakistan Quake
Government officials believe between 30,000 and 40,000 people are dead after a massive earthquake in Pakistan. The most severely affected regions house five million people, where hundreds of children are reportedly trapped amid the rubble of destroyed schools across the region. Unofficial accounts of those reported injured run as high as 60,000. The Pakistan government and workers from UNICEF are working to find orphaned children in more remote areas. There are hundreds of children believed to have been separated from their families, left vulnerable to injury, hunger and cold weather conditions.
Guatemalan Landslide Buries 1,400 People
Rescuers continue to dig for bodies in deep pools of mud and rock that cover a Guatemalan village after a mudslide, triggered by Hurricane Stan, killed up to 1,400 people. After days of heavy rain pelted a small Guatemalan community, portions of the volcanic slopes crashed down over the Maya Indian village of Panabaj, leaving no survivors in its wake. Hurricane Stan is responsible for an additional 67 deaths across El Salvador, Mexico, Honduras, and Nicaragua.
20 Dead in Russian Government Attacks
20 people are dead and another 40 are wounded after gunmen launched simultaneous attacks on several government installations in the southern Russian city of Nalchik, near the border of Chechnya. Gun battles raged in the streets near the local offices of the Russian FSB federal security service and the interior ministry, while another attack on the Nalchik airport was thwarted. Responsibility for the violence is unknown, but Chechen rebels had previously vowed to continue attacks on Russian federal security installations in the volatile North Caucacus region.
70 Insurgents Killed by US Air Strikes in Iraq
70 rebels were killed in US air strikes in the Ramadi region of western Iraq, according to US military officials. The day after five US soldiers died in a roadside bombing in the same area, 20 insurgents were killed when a US warplane dropped a precision-guided bomb on a group of militants placing an improvised explosive device along a stretch of road east of Ramadi. Another 50 suspected insurgents were killed in a series of additional strikes around Ramadi by helicopter gunships and F-18 fighters.
31 Taliban Fighters Dead in Border Clashes
31 Taliban militants were killed in clashes with government forces near the border with Pakistan, according to the Ministry of Defense. 28 militants were killed by Afghan troops after they attempted to attack a security post near the border in the southeastern province of Paktika. The ensuing clash lasted several hours. In a separate battle, three Taliban fighters were killed after they ambushed a truck transporting supplies for US-led coalition forces in another part of the province. Two Afghan National Army officers were wounded in the attack.
Bombing Suspects Sought by Indonesian Police
Indonesian police are searching for the suspects who helped suicide bombers attack the resort of Bali in violence that killed at least 19 people and left 120 wounded. Authorities say the hotel bombings are similar tactics used by al Qaeda affiliate Jemaah Islamiyah (JI), a terrorist organization that has waged a bloody campaign against Western interests for the past five years. Most of the dead and those wounded in the suicide bombings were Indonesian locals.
