Afghan Operation Leaves 40 Insurgents Dead
A joint Afghan-US operation has killed more than 40 insurgents in the past three weeks in Afghanistan's Konar Province. Operation Whalers was conducted by Afghan National Army units and US Marines, who fought in 29 separate engagements against terrorists in the region to clear the way for the upcoming Afghan legislative elections. Fighting took place in the Chawkay, Asadabad, Pech and Narang districts, close to Afghanistan's border with Pakistan.
Jackson Trial Mom Faces Charges
The mother of the teenage boy who accused Michael Jackson of sexual molestation has been charged with five felony counts of welfare fraud. It is alleged that the mother fraudulently obtained nearly $18,800 in welfare payments between November 2001 and March 2003. The woman is accused of failing to disclose to welfare workers that she and her family received money from a civil suit settlement. During the Jackson trial, the mother invoked her Fifth Amendment right and did not answer questions related to the fraud investigation. Jackson was acquitted of all charges against her son in June.
Iraqi ‘Cops’ Hits the Airwaves
A new television program, roughly modeled after the American TV show, “Cops,” has debuted in Iraq. The show features actual footage of Iraqi Police performing sometimes dangerous tasks in an effort to make the government’s efforts clearer to Iraqi citizens. A live call-in portion of “The Cops Show” allows the public to ask questions or offer praise to their protectors. The weekly program has the ability to reach nearly 1 million viewers in the northern city of Kirkuk.

At Least 4 More Years in Iraq, Say Officials
More than 100,000 soldiers will be prepared to stay in Iraq for the next four years, according to the Army’s top general. Gen. Peter Schoomaker says the Army will train and equip 100,000 soldiers, but that the actual number of soldiers that will be required to stabilize the nation remains unknown. Schoomaker added he is confident the Army can continue to provide the current number of Army forces, about 138,000 US troops, to fight the insurgency for many more years.
Borders Tightened in Guatemala after Prison Violence
In light of the prison riots last week that left 35 prisoners dead, Guatemala has tightened border security to stop gang members from neighboring countries from entering the region. Fearing a bitter feud between the Mara Salvatrucha gang and other violent groups, the borders of Mexico, El Salvador and Honduras are being monitored for gang infiltration. The Mara gang launched its attack on rival prison gangs with smuggled grenades, guns and machetes from behind the bars of
Source Says 9/11 Panel Not Privy to All
The 9/11 Commission lacked information in its investigation of the September 11, 2001 attacks, according to US Army Lt. Col. Anthony Shaffer. Publicly identifying himself for the first time, Shaffer disclosed there was information uncovered in 2000 relating to Mohamed Atta, the lead hijacker in the attacks, which was not turned over to the commission due to a disagreement over domestic law enforcement’s compliance to turn over evidence. According to Shaffer, “there was a significant amount of information that was totally deleted or not provided to the 9/11 commissioners” prior to the group’s final report, completed in July 2004.
War on Terror Casualties Honored with Distinct Headstones
Nearly all Arlington National Cemetery gravestones for troops killed in Iraq or Afghanistan are inscribed with the operation names the soldiers lost their lives executing. Unlike any other conflict in history, War on Terror victims’ graves are personalized with operation names like “Enduring Freedom” or “Iraqi Freedom” on the headstones. The Pentagon has come under pressure for the decision, which opponents claim is a ploy to garner support for the war, but officials insist it is a measure taken to more personally honor the fallen heroes involved in Iraq and Afghanistan..
