Mission 56 - Chronology
Operation Whalers

  • August 11, 2005:
Hundreds of Marines and Afghan Special Forces troops move into position at one end of the valley, poised to infiltrate the Taliban’s position.

In a corn field nearby, soldiers build a makeshift re-supply base by digging deep mortar and machine-gun pits.

Tipped off that an operation is impending, rebels fire rockets at a nearby US military post, and a troop convoy. The attack is unsuccessful.

  • August 12-13, 2005
American and Afghan forces spend 48 hours hiking into the rugged mountains. Some soldiers lead donkeys loaded with food and water to keep the troops’ load light.

In a final warning to the Taliban, A-10 attack planes begin to circle high above the incoming soldiers.

  • August 15, 2005:
28 militants are dead in provinces across Afghanistan, as the US-led operation to find and destroy remnants of the Taliban spreads into nearby regions.
  • August 16, 2005:
Two Marines are wounded in an assault by about 10 militants in Korengal Valley.

  • August 18, 2005
One US marine and an Afghan National Army (ANA) soldier are killed and four other ANA soldiers are wounded as they battle enemy forces northwest of Asadabad.

  • August 22, 2005:
Through 11 days and nights, US and Afghan soldiers have suffered 29 separate battles that leave 40 Taliban fighters dead. Authorities call an end to Operation Whalers, hailing the mission a success.
