Operation Spear

Two Dead after Florida Hostage Standoff
An Apopka woman and her captor were found dead three hours after a 911 call was placed to the residence of Deanna Rose Gallagher, 27, who was being held at gunpoint by an unidentified man. A Special Response Team set up a perimeter and awaited the arrival of a SWAT team when gunshots were heard from the home. Police say the man killed Gallagher, then himself. The motive for the murder is unknown: Gallagher is a single mother of two who recently moved to the neighborhood to give her two sons a safer place to grow up.
Authorities Believe Remains Belong to Missing 9-Year-Old Boy
Idaho authorities searching for a missing 9-year-old boy have discovered human remains they believe may belong to Dylan Groene, the subject of their search. The boy’s sister, 8-year-old Shasta Groene, was found days earlier at a Denny’s restaurant with a registered sex offender. The siblings had been the subjects of a massive manhunt since Coeur D’Alene police discovered their mother, her boyfriend, and an older brother murdered in their home. Authorities plan to charge Joseph Edward Duncan III, 42, of Fargo, ND with kidnapping and being a fugitive from justice. Other charges may follow pending the results of the identification of the remains.
Van Gogh Murderer gets Life in Prison
Mohammed Bouyeri, 27, received a sentence of life in prison for murdering Theo Van Gogh, a Dutch filmmaker and distant relative of 18th century painter Vincent Van Gogh. Mounting no defense in his two-day trial, Bouyeri stated he was justified in killing Van Gogh for insulting Islam in his short film “Submission,” which focused on the secondary role Islamic women have in Muslim society. Bouyeri ambushed Van Gogh on an Amsterdam street, and shot him repeatedly before slitting his throat. Bouyeri claims he acted in the name of Islam and felt no remorse for the grisly murder.
Weapons Dump Explosion Leaves 5 Dead, 2 Missing
A massive explosion in Takhar province, Afghanistan has left five Afghans dead and two German soldiers missing. The blast occurred as weapons in a dump near an airfield were being transported to be destroyed. The Afghans were working as porters, responsible for carrying the arms to waiting trucks, when the accident occurred. The weapons dump was a combination of arms collected as part of a national program to disarm militias across Afghanistan. Last month, another explosives cache detonated accidentally, killing 26 civilians.
Afghanistan Sends Illicit Drugs Up in Smoke

In a public show of strength against the sale, use and distribution of illegal drugs, Afghanistan burned about 60 tons of opium, heroin, hashish and other drugs in massive bonfires held across the country. The largest cache of drugs was in Kabul, where 13 tons of opium, 9 tons of hashish, 2 tons of heorin and 6 tons of other narcotics lit up the Afghan sky. Seven stockpiles totalling about 32 tons of drugs were destroyed in other provinces. Afghanistan is to blame for supplying 90 percent of the world's opium. The US and Britain have donated hundreds of millions of dollars for a comprehensive anti-drug campaign in Afghanistan.
6 Die in Northern Iraq Suicide Attacks
Six people died and eight more were wounded when a suicide bomber hid explosives beneath watermelons in a pickup truck, then slammed into a police headquarters in northern Iraq. The Bab al-Toob police station in central Mosul was partially destroyed in the early morning attack. The truck that detonated traveled through a checkpoint before hitting the police station, where four policemen inside the building and two civilians on the street died.
4th of July Celebrations Planned in Iraq
US Plans for Independence Day are underway for soldiers stationed in Iraq. Troops who have suffered weeks of severe heat and frequent sandstorms will celebrate with American-style barbecues and volleyball games. A boxing tournament is planned at a base in Taji, and in Baghdad, Humvee pulls and three-mile races are slated as 4th of July events. In and around Saddam Hussein’s former palaces, horseshoe games and pool parties will add to the celebrations.
More Iraqi Prisons to Come
US commanders in Iraq are planning the construction of new detention facilities to add to the notorious Abu Ghraib prison and Camp Bucca. Iraq’s growing number of inmates calls for the development of a third major prison, according to military officials. Abu Ghraib prison is scheduled to be handed over to the Iraqi Ministry of Justice by February of 2006, and is slated for destruction. Officials fear the symbolic act will lead to a lack of facilities to hold Iraq’s incarcerated. The planned construction efforts will increase the potential to house prisoners to 16,000.
