Mission 47 - Global Headlines
Operation Matador

Protests Mark Fall of Baghdad Anniversary
Tens of thousands of Shiites filled Firdos Square and adjacent avenues in a show of non-support for the US-led invasion. The protestors, supporters of rebel cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, waved Iraqi flags and mocked the images of US soldiers pulling down the enormous statue of Saddam Hussein in celebration of the fall of Baghdad. The crowd descended on models of President Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair, toppling them in a show of anger over the US occupation in Iraq.
Possible Nuke Tests in North Korea
According to a US government official, evidence of North Korea digging holes and filling them up with dirt could indicate they are preparing for underground nuclear tests. There is so far no indication of a nuclear device or weapon being placed in the holes, but North Korea is carefully monitored due to their deceptive practices in the past, and in light of satellite photos that appear to show rapid, extensive preparations for a nuclear weapons test. Recently, North Korea was observed testing its short-range missiles.
Grenades Detonated in NYC
New York City police are questioning people and studying video surveillance tapes in their investigation of the detonation of two makeshift grenades. The grenades exploded outside the British Consulate building in the early morning hours of Britain’s Election Day. Glass panels at the entrance of the building shattered in the explosion and a one-foot chunk from a planter was blown off. There were no injuries in the explosion, partially due to the time of detonation, just before 4:00 a.m. FBI investigators are questioning a United Nations employee from the Netherlands who loitered near the Midtown building shortly before the explosion.
Britain’s Blair Wins Third Term
Tony Blair won a historic third term as prime minister of Britain, matching Margaret Thatcher’s record as the only other post-wartime prime minister to have won three successive general elections. Blair also has the distinction of being the only Labour leader to be elected for the third time. Due in large part to Blair’s staunch support of the War in Iraq, his margin of victory was less than half what it was in the Labour party’s massive wins in 1997 and 2001. He also suffers the lowest share of the vote for a ruling party in modern history.
Newsweek Retracts Article that Sparked Violence
Newsweek magazine has issued a retraction of a May 9 report on the alleged desecration of the Quran by military personnel stationed at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Newsweek’s report claimed members of the US military tossed copies of the holy Quran into toilets, charges of defilement that sparked fierce anti-American riots in Afghanistan and other parts of the Muslim world. At least four deaths occurred during riots in Jalalabad, Afghanistan, and 15 deaths in total are blamed on the erroneous report.
Afghan TV Personality Murdered
A former commentator for a controversial TV station was shot dead in her Kabul home. Shaima Rezayee was dismissed two months ago from her position as an on-air personality for Tolo TV amid complaints by conservatives over her demeanor on the air. Ms. Rezayee was a Western-style veejay for a music-video program called “Hop,” a position that called for her to dress in western garb and chat candidly with male counterparts. Both Rezayee and the TV station had come under scrutiny by a council of religious scholars for participating in “programs opposed to Islam and national values.” Investigators say Rezayee’s brothers may have been involved, and that her death may have been the result of an honor killing.
55 Corpses Discovered in Iraq
Iraqi police have found at least 55 corpses in six locations, a dozen of which are believed to have been men executed this week. Eight of the Iraqi bodies were found blindfolded with their hands bound in Baghdad's northeastern Al-Sha'ab area. The bodies had all sustained shots to the head. Four other bodies of Iraqi men were discovered near a southeastern Baghdad mosque, and nine bodies were found in Al-Mada'in, the same city south of Baghdad where some 50 bodies were discovered last month. Other corpses have been found across the country: on the streets, in trucks and inside garbage dumps.
Runaway Bride May Face Charges
Jennifer Wilbanks, 32, the runaway bride whose disappearance prompted a massive search and nationwide attention, could face criminal charges after reporting she had been kidnapped from outside her Duluth home on April 26. While a $50,000 manhunt was underway, Wilbanks traveled to Las Vegas and Albuquerque on her own free will, but called 911 claiming she had been abducted and sexually assaulted. Under questioning, Wilbanks admitted she fled Georgia because of personal issues. She faces a misdemeanor charge of filing a false report, and a felony charge of making false statements.
