Mission 48 - Chronology
Operation Matador

  • Saturday:
The U.S. offensive begins in Qaim, a town 200 miles northwest of Baghdad on the southern bank of the Euphrates River. American intelligence indicates insurgents are massed north of the waterway, but as soldiers built a pontoon bridge, they started taking mortar fire from nearby Obeidi.

  • Sunday:
When US forces enter Obeidi, they are confronted by well-equipped fighters on rooftops and balconies, in basements and sandbag bunkers positioned in front of some homes. U.S. forces pound the area with air strikes and artillery barrages. Some 70 insurgents are killed.

  • Monday and Tuesday:
US forces cross the Euphrates and push along the winding river to the border, meeting little resistance. Marines cross from the southern banks of the Euphrates River into the northern Jazira Desert in pursuit of the enemy. Raja Nawaf Farhan al-Mahalawi, the governor of Anbar province, is kidnapped by people demanding U.S. forces cease operations in the area.

  • Wednesday:
Insurgents kill six Marines in one squad when their troop transporter hits a bomb near Karabilah.

  • Friday:
Periodic air strikes continue, including one that kills 12 insurgents manning a checkpoint east of Husaybah, a nearby village. Another air strike targets a suspected terrorist safe house in nearby Karabilah. Secondary explosions indicate the presence of weapons and munitions in the building.

  • Saturday:
A long column of US troops backed by tanks and helicopters roll back across the river and surround Obeidi. Shelling begins several hours later. Marines conduct a “cordon and search” operation in the area, looking for insurgents, foreign fighters, weapons and bomb-making material.

  • At the close of Operation Matador, 125 militants are dead, along with 9 Marines.
