The Crime of Dujail: Saddam's Revenge

Ceasefire in Falkland Islands, Says Thatcher
British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher announced a ceasefire between British and Argentine forces on the Falkland Islands. Thatcher’s statement, addressed to the House of Commons, was greeted with a round of applause from all parties. British warships have been stationed in the Falklands since April, just shy of three weeks after Argentina invaded South Georgia. More than 800 people have been killed in fighting in the surrounding area since. The ceasefire calls for British troops to use their weapons only in self defense while negotiations take place for the surrender of the Junta's army on the islands. The Falklands War highlights years of disputed ownership of the islands.
New Orleans Plane Crash Kills All Aboard
A Pan Am World Airways airliner has crashed, killing all 138 passengers and crew members aboard. Another 8 people were killed on the ground when the Boeing 727, on a scheduled flight from New Orleans to Las Vegas, crashed after reaching an altitude of 95 to 150 feet. Flight 759 was just 29 seconds into its takeoff when it began a rapid descent, crashing into trees and houses in a residential section of New Orleans. Six houses were destroyed and five houses were damaged substantially in initial explosion and ensuing ground fire. Wind shear is being investigated as a possible cause for the crash.
Hinckley Found Not Guilty
After seven weeks of testimony and three days of deliberation, the jury has returned a verdict of not guilty by reason of insanity in the case against John Hinckley Jr. Hinckley was on trial for firing six shots at President Reagan and his entourage from his Rohm R6-14 revolver, hitting the president and wounding 3 other people in a failed assassination attempt. Hinckley shot Press Secretary James Brady in the left temple, Officer Thomas Delahanty in the neck, and Security Agent Timothy J. McCarthy in his stomach. Hinckley was immediately arrested on the scene. Allegedly, Hinckley was trying to kill President Reagan in an attempt to gain the attention of Hollywood actress Jodie Foster.
IRA bombs rip through London
Two bombs set by Irish Republican Army have left eight soldiers dead and nearly 50 people wounded in central London. Police say MPs were warned of a renewed IRA bombing campaign two weeks ago after an eight month lull in their activities. The first bomb detonated in Hyde Park, killing two soldiers and injuring 23 others. The second explosion occurred in Regents Park less than two hours later, killing six soldiers instantly and injuring another 24 people. The IRA took responsibility for the attacks in a statement saying, “The Irish people have sovereign and national rights which no task or occupational force can put down.”
Iran Launches Offensive into Iraq
The third Iranian offensive this month has resulted in the deaths of 27,000 soldiers. Iran has launched a string of offensive operations inside Iraq, attacks that opened with Iranian forces penetrating within ten miles of Basra before bloody ground fighting began between the Middle East neighbors. The fierce resistance by Iraqi forces within their own territory proves, according to Iraqis, that the Shiite population will not join forces with Iran, nor rise up to topple Iraqi President Hussein. At least 80,000 Iranian and Iraqi soldiers have been killed since the start of the Iran-Iraq war two years ago.
Engineer Explains 70 mph Derailment
The engineer of a Chicago commuter train that derailed, killing two passengers, released a statement that he was traveling at 70 mph—60 mph over the speed limit—because he didn’t see any signs telling him the train would switch tracks. 80 passengers were injured when the train suddenly derailed 5 miles sough of downtown Chicago. In its preliminary report into the incident, the National Transportation Safety Board reports all signals appeared to have been working properly.

The latest insurgent attacks push the US death toll in Iraq, tabulated since the beginning of combat operations in March of 2003, to 1,907 .
Afghan President Calls for Military Change
Afghanistan’s President Hamid Karzai states air strikes are no longer effective against the Taliban and al Qaeda fighters still active in Afghanistan, and that searching homes without government approval should cease. The shift in military strategy calls for US should to focus solely on existing terror bases and support networks. President Karzai believes the US should place emphasis is on breaking up the supply and money routes used to fund the terrorists.
