Mission 68 - Tactical
MP Tank Battle

Being in control of a battle tank is a total rush. You have a tremendous amount of size and power under your command. Especially inside the modern American and British tanks, you’re practically impervious to all infantry-carried weapons. The downside is that you’re more susceptible to confusion inside a tank.

The primary debilitating factor of being in a tank has to be the lack of visibility and battlefield awareness. The most modern tank designs have addressed this problem with the integration of high-speed communication gear, computers, fiber optics, situational maps and clear displays. The big advancement in communications came back in WWII from the Germans, who were well known as innovators in the tank game.

The Germans came up with inter-crew intercoms inside the battle tank. Up until that point, people just hollered at each other over the engine and the guns, so the Germans had a huge advantage in that they could clearly communicate with one another in a conversational tone. They had the right idea, because among the crew members of the tank there has to be a high degree of coordination to fight the fight as an effective unit.

If you’re fighting a battle tank on tank, it’s a game of maneuver. You want to try and maintain combat at long range if you can, because close-range slug matches are just like pie fights: everyone’s going to get messed up. At long range, high velocity weapons can win out, particularly in the case of US-style tanks against former Soviet bloc tanks.

In most tank designs, your shot will ricochet up and over, so by hitting lower, especially in a side shot, you’ve got a good chance of hitting the track, which will give you a mobility kill. Then, you can move to the rear and do what you need to do.

Defensively, you don’t want to get into a maneuvering position where you’re going to get fired at on the rear of your tank, and you don’t want to present the side of your tank as a target, either. Ideally, you want to get into a down position so that all that sticks out is your gun. Silhouette is a big deal in armored combat, so always consider how much is exposed from the ground to the top of your tank. The idea is to offer as little target to the enemy as possible.

If you have a building to use as cover, it’s best not to reveal your position until you have a kill. Dart out, get an angle shot on the target if you can, then get back before anyone in the squadron can see where it came from. If you do it right, you could pull off quite a few kills before the enemy ever realizes what’s going on.
