Mission 1 - Detail On the night of July 21, 2003 coalition forces receive a tip that Uday and Qusay Hussein - sons of the deposed dictator - are hiding in Mosul, a major city in the north of Iraq. They have reportedly barricaded themselves within a partially fortified home. A plan of attack is put in place to capture or kill the infamous brothers, commencing the following morning. By 9:00 a.m. on July 22nd, the area is cordoned off by Iraqi police under US command. After coalition ground forces receive no response to their demand to surrender, C-4 explosives are used to blow the front gates open. Soldiers rush the house, greeted by enemy AK-47 gunfire in and around the property. Four soldiers are wounded, forcing a temporary retreat. In combination with MK-19 grenade launchers and Humvee -mounted .50 caliber machine guns , AT-4 rockets are fired into the house. An hour later, Kiowa helicopters begin to fire machine guns and rockets from above. Troops clear the way for 10 TOW missiles to be fired into the house, probably delivering the fatal blow to Uday, Qusay and their bodyguard. Ground troops move in again and, after exchanging gunfire with the last enemy standing, soldiers pursue and kill him on the second floor By 2:00 p.m., the house is secure and bodies are removed for identification. |
