Mission 44 - Forces
Kentucky National Guard

Friendly Forces

The Kentucky National Guard is one of the oldest military forces in the United States, founded in 1775 when Kentucky was still considered Fincastle County, a part of western Virginia. First called the local Militia, the Guard took arms against Indians and outsiders threatening the local territory. In its humble beginnings, the members had no uniforms, and each man used his own provisions, weapons and horse. The same self-sacrifice and patriotism powers the Kentucky National Guard today.

The Kentucky National Guard stood against tyranny and oppression, a symbol for freedom throughout the Revolutionary War; Indian Wars; the War of 1812; the Civil and Spanish-American Wars; World Wars I and II; in Korea and Vietnam. Most recently, the Kentucky National Guard has represented America in the War on Terror in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom, and in Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. By May of 2003, the Kentucky National Guard accounted for 2,409 of the soldiers on active duty. To date, nearly two-thirds of the Kentucky National Guard have been mobilized and deployed in the Global War on Terror.

182 soldiers from the Kentucky National Guard, two platoons of the 617th Military Police Company, have been deployed in central Iraq since November of 2004. They provide security for buildings, convoys and other soldiers around the country.

 Enemy Forces

There are dozens of insurgent groups carrying out attacks against coalition forces in Iraq: rebel forces consisting of regime loyalists, nationalistic groups opposed to the US presence, formerly suppressed Islamists, and a variety of jihaddist groups and foreign militias. It is often difficult to separate the various factions as many are closely-aligned al Qaeda groups led by master terrorist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, or even possibly the same group operating under various names.
