Mission 44 - Chronology
Kentucky National Guard

On the southeastern outskirts of Baghdad, 40-50 heavily-armed Iraqi insurgents attack a convoy of 30 civilian tractor trailer trucks along the Alternate Supply Route.

Under heavy RPG and machine gun fire, three truck drivers are killed and six are wounded. One armored HMMWV escort is in the kill zone: Three COSCOM soldiers are wounded.

Three minutes later, the enemy move forward toward the disabled convoy. They are carrying handcuffs.

Three armored HMMWV that form the MP Squad Raven 42 arrive and travel parallel to the convoy, on the shoulder of the road. The MP open fire with .50 caliber machine guns and MK-19 grenade launchers.

The MPs move across the front of the kill zone and turn up an access road next to the field of enemy and take position.

An RPG hits the middle HMMWV, knocking the gunner unconscious. At the same time, the rear vehicle's three occupants open their doors and dismount to fight. They are wounded under heavy fire.

The driver of the middle vehicle sprints to the rear vehicle, taking position on the SAW on top.

The medic dismounts from the third vehicle, and, with the first vehicle's driver, sprints back to treat the three wounded MPs.

Revived, the gunner of the second vehicle climbs back to the .50 caliber and joins the fight.

A squad leader Staff Sergeant and team leader Sergeant rush to a ditch 20 meters away to clear the trench line. Ten insurgents are killed in the trench line by the .50 caliber and SAW flank fire.
