Mission 52 - Chronology
Escape from Asadabad

  • June 28, 2005:

Four commandos on a reconnaissance mission as part of Operation Red Wing, searching for Taliban-led rebels and Al Qaeda fighters in Kunar province are attacked by a dozen enemy terrorists at dusk.

  • The team radios for reinforcements. In response, eight Navy SEALs and an eight-member crew from the Army's 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment—the elite Night Stalkers—fly toward the mountains in a special forces MH-47 Chinook helicopter.

  • As the flight nears the region, an enemy’s rocket-propelled grenade hits the massive chopper, downing the flight and killing all aboard.

  • U.S. warplanes, helicopters and ground forces are dispatched to the site, but efforts to reconstruct the scene are delayed by rainstorms that pound the region for 24 hours.

  • June 29, 2005:

The crash site is secured, but there is no sign of the four SEALs. There is also no blood evidence in the area. Where the SEALs are and what happened after the helicopter was shot down is unknown.

  • July 2, 2005:

A friendly tribal elder living in the nearby mountains sends a note to authorities saying he is caring for a wounded Navy SEAL he found in the mountains.

  • July 3, 2005:

US forces rush to the villager’s home and find the SEAL alive, and in stable condition.

  • July 4, 2005:

US troops in an undisclosed location recover the bodies of two SEALs in a deep ravine.

  • July 10, 2005:

The last Navy SEAL is found dead in roughly the same area as his two comrades were found nearly a week earlier.
