Based in Northern Germany, the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards are Scotland's only cavalry, a fierce contributor to the strength of Britain’s Royal Armoured Corps. Known as the “Desert Rats,” these soldiers are the first regiment of the British Army to be equipped with the Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank.

With nearly 500 soldiers among its ranks, the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards was originally formed from three Scottish regiments, including the oldest surviving Cavalry of the Line in the British Army, the Royal Scots Greys, which brings to the table more than 300 years of warfare experience.

The Royal Scots Dragoon Guard regiment was deployed to the Persian Gulf in support of the American-led operation in 1991 against Saddam Hussein’s military infiltration of Kuwait. Later, the regiment was deployed to Kosovo twice. In 2003, as part of Britain’s force during the War in Iraq, the Desert Rats were an integral part of Britain’s Operation Telic, a wave of British troops that cleared the way through Iraq’s second largest city, Basra. The fierce resistance met by Iraqi insurgents was capped by the largest tank engagement led by British soldiers since WWII. Days later, the Desert Rats joined forces with the Irish Guard Warriors to reclaim the city of Basra from the grip of insurgents.
