Mission 74- Force Background & Histories
The British Empire Strikes Back: Canadian Counterstrike

Friendly Forces

Back in August of 1914, the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry was inducted and was first mobilized the following day. Named for the daughter of Prince Arthur, the first member of Britain's Royal Family to become Governor General of Canada, the regiment was built from a band of brothers that previously served the British Empire.
The Patricians earned an illustrious reputation for their participation in battles through WWI, WWII and the Korean War, for which they earned the Distinguished Unit Citation from the President of the United States.
In February 2002, a contingent of 850 members of the 3rd Battalion of the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry Battle Group deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan for six months as part of Operation Apollo. Integrated into the US Army task force, the soldiers took part in offensive operations against the Taliban regime. The group continues to launch offensive and counter-offensive operations to thwart enemy attacks and capture insurgent fighters throughout Afghanistan.
Seventeen Canadian soldiers and one diplomat have been killed in Afghanistan since 2002. Just two weeks ago, Canada lost its first female soldier as she fought alongside the Princess Patricia’s troops by Taliban forces. It was Canada’s first female combat death since the WWII. Back to top
