Plague Warning as Bird Flu Spreads
Authorities say avian flu is becoming more entrenched in poultry flocks, upping the risk that more humans will become infected. To date, the bird flu virus has reportedly infected about 150 people, killing at least 78 people from six countries. Avian flu spread rapidly across Asia and into Eastern Europe, possibly by way of migratory birds or from the transport of domestic birds. Most recently, test confirmed the virus in the lungs of a Turkish child who died last week, the third sibling in a trio of young deaths caused by the avian flu infection.
345 Pilgrims Dead in Stampede
More than 300 Muslim pilgrims were crushed to death and at least 1,000 injured in a stampede in Mina, near Mecca, in Saudi Arabia. Disaster struck during the symbolic stoning ritual on the last day of the Haj, when reportedly tens of thousands of pilgrims rushed to complete the ritual. The horrific stampede is blamed on pieces of scattered luggage about the site, which caused many pilgrims to fall and be trampled over by the crowd. The luggage had reportedly fallen from a bus traveling through the eastern entrance of the Jamarat bridge.
More Than 150 Dead in Iraq Attacks
In a wave of deadly attacks across Iraq, 163 people are reported dead from a combination of suicide bombers, roadside bombs and insurgent fighting. Shiite pilgrims in the south and police recruits in central Iraq were both struck by suicide bombers, and an improvised explosive device killed five U.S. soldiers on Thursday, killing at least 110 people in the two regions alone. A two-day death toll from insurgent attacks is estimated to be 163, reflecting a dramatic increase in violence following Iraq's parliamentary elections.
Deliberations over Iran Nukes Planned
Diplomacy appears to continue to fail for Britain, France and Germany in the bid to convince Iran to abandon its uranium enrichment program, in the wake of reports Iran has removed the United Nations seals on uranium enrichment research facilities. Officials have announced British, French and German authorities plan to meet with representatives from China, Russia and the United States in London next week to discuss the potentially grave situation. The goal of the multi-national meeting is to build an international consensus on how to respond to Iran's bold defiance. The United States and European Union have long suspected Iran is using its nuclear program as a front for developing atomic weapons. Officials from Tehran argue Iran needs nuclear development solely for the generation of electricity.
8 Stabbed in Moscow Synagogue Attack
Alexander Koptsev, 20, of Moscow, has been charged in a vicious multi-stabbing attack at the Bolshaya Bronnaya synagogue and Jewish cultural center in Moscow, Russia. At about 5:30 p.m. Koptsev allegedly evaded the center's metal detector, attacked a guard with a large butcher knife, and then began stabbing worshippers and people assembling for study groups and evening prayers. Witnesses report Koptsev stabbed several people downstairs before moving up to the second floor, shouting "Heil Hitler!" and "I will kill!" Koptsev was finally subdued by a rabbi and his 18-year-old son.
Life in Prison for Man in Failed Assassination of Bush
A court has convicted 27-year-old Vladimir Arutyunian of trying to assassinate President Bush and Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, and handed down a life sentence in prison for his crime. During a May 10 rally, Arutyunian admittedly threw a grenade at the two leaders during a rally. The grenade, wrapped in cloth, apparently malfunctioned, landing about 100 feet from the stage where Bush and Saakashvili were standing, and failed to explode. He also was convicted of killing a policeman in a shootout before his arrest. Arutyunian not only acknowledged that he threw the grenade in the direction of the stage, but claimed he would try again to kill President Bush if given the chance.
21 Dead in Afghanistan Checkpoint AttackX
7 Afghan troops are dead after suspected al Qaeda and Taliban militants fired rockets at the Sarbandki checkpoint east of North Waziristan's regional headquarters. Security forces from nearby checkpoints joined the ensuing firefight, which lasted more than four hours and left 14 militants dead. A local Taliban commander is reported among the dead, as well as several foreign fighters, according to an anonymous security official. Waziristan is believed to shelter many al Qaeda members throughout the vast region of rugged mountains and sprawling deserts. Militant sympathizers from conservative local tribes on both sides of the border are believed to aid the terrorists.
West Virginia Coal Mine Explosion Kills 11
The bodies of 11 coal miners trapped in a mine in Upshur County, West Virginia have been recovered, authorities say. Preliminary reports suggest the men survived the explosion that left them trapped, but eventually died from the noxious fumes that leaked behind their makeshift barricade. The miners had created a curtain from plastic and fibrous material used to direct the flow of air inside mines in hopes of sustaining an area of clean air until they could be rescued. Only one survivor from the Sago Mine was recovered. Randal McCloy, Junior remains in critical but stable condition after being rescued some 40 hours after the unexplained blast inside the mine.
