Iraqi and Coalition forces continue to suffer vicious ground and VBIED attacks at roadside checkpoints across Iraq. Here is a sampling of the horror inflicted in the past month alone:

  • July 13, 2005:

A suicide bomber in an explosives-laden SUV kills 27 people, including an American soldier and at least 25 children under the age of 13. Nearly 30 more Iraqis are left wounded in the late morning attack on an impromptu US checkpoint, where throngs of children were seen playing nearby.

  • July 14, 2005:

A car bomb explodes near a US checkpoint. Soon thereafter, two bombers approach the same Baghdad checkpoint and one of the men detonates a bomb hidden in a suicide vest. The second man is shot dead by Iraqi Police after attempting to flee the scene. He too is found wearing a suicide vest..

  • July 15, 2005:

Three suicide-car-bomb attacks in Baghdad claim the lives of 15 Iraqi civilians and five Iraqi soldiers. Wounded are six Iraqi checkpoint soldiers and 17 civilians.

  • July 16, 2005:

At least eight people are killed and 15 wounded in a midday attack by a suicide car bomber who slams into an Iraqi Army checkpoint in the north of the capital. Most of the victims are Iraqi soldiers.

  • July 31, 2005:

A car bomb explodes at an Iraqi police checkpoint south of Baghdad, killing five people and wounding 10. Two of the dead are Iraqi policemen, killed while investigating an abandoned car left by the side of the road near the checkpoint. The explosives-packed vehicle was detonated remotely.

  • August 6, 2005:

A suicide car bomber detonates his vehicle at a police checkpoint north of Hillah, in Babil province south of the capital, killing two policemen and wounding two others.

  • August 8, 2005:

A suicide attacker drives a truck loaded with explosives into a nearby Iraqi Army checkpoint, killing an Iraqi soldier.

A second suicide car bomber tries to attack another Iraqi checkpoint in the area, but a US tank fires on the car, killing the driver and causing the car bomb to detonate before it reaches its target. Three civilians are wounded in the blast.

  • August 20, 2005:

Five people are dead and 12 wounded after a suicide bomber detonates a car bomb at a police checkpoint south of Baghdad. Most of the wounded remain in serious condition.
