Iraqi Insurgency Influencing Afghan Rebel Tactics
Washington is concerned about mounting evidence suggesting Afghan fighters are using the same terrorist techniques used in Iraqi insurgency. Both US and Afghan officials are presenting such facts to Afghan president Hamid Karzai, who demands the US to back off militarily, even in light of the fact that Taliban fighters continue to be well-equipped and funded. It is believed foreign fighters are working with insurgents in Afghanistan to educate them on their experiences with the US military in Iraq, teaching the shortcomings of the troops and effectiveness of certain tactics, like the manufacturing and detonation of IEDs.
Holocaust Survivor, Advocate Dead at 96
Simon Wiesenthal, founder and head of the Jewish Historical Documentation Centre, has died at the age of 96. Wiesenthal was held in Mauthausen concentration camp, where he vowed to live to see those responsible for running the death camps brought to justice. Upon his release in 1945, Wiesenthal began his life’s work. He was instrumental in the search and arrest of 3,000 war criminals, including Adolf Eichmann, instrumental in organizing the mass killing of Jews in the Third Reich. Wiesenthal began his mission to identify and bring to German persecutors to justice in 1947, when he started the war crimes archive with 91 SS officers and guards he vividly recalled throughout his imprisonment in various concentration camps.
IP Protest against British Soldiers in Basra
An anti-British protest has been waged in Basra by Iraqi Police over a British raid to free two undercover soldiers last week. About 200 policemen marched through the streets of the southern city, calling for the resignation of Basra’s police chief and the return of the British soldiers, whom they labeled “terrorists.” After a firefight on Monday, two British undercover soldiers were detained for questioning by Iraqi security forces. The soldiers reported they had been handed over by police to a militia group, sparking a raid by British forces that resulted in the destruction of portions of the jailhouse. The Iraqi Police state the British soldiers never left police custody, therefore the violent raid was completely unnecessary.
Basra Soldiers Battle Increase in Militia Activity
Over the past nine months, the Shi’ite Muslim city of Basra has suffered a surge in insurgent activity by militants. Rebel factions vying for power over security forces and government council are waging attacks against British troops and journalists. According to Iraqi authorities, insurgents have managed to infiltrate police troops and other security forces. British forces have been in Basra for 2 ½ years, securing the city and empowering local security forces. The latest revelation is discouraging to the local populace, who are bitter after suffering what they perceive as the Coalition’s continual failure to produce an adequate police force.
Gotti Trial Ends in Acquittal
John A. "Junior" Gotti ended after eight days of deliberation, when a panel of seven women and five men acquitted the 41-year-old accused mobster of securities fraud. The jury announced it was unable to reach a harmonious decision on the three other counts, which included loan-sharking and the charge of kidnapping the founder of the Guardian Angels, prompting a mistrial. Gotti is expected to be retried, but freed on $2 million bail by the end of the week.
Engineer Explains 70 mph Derailment
The engineer of a Chicago commuter train that derailed, killing two passengers, released a statement that he was traveling at 70 mph—60 mph over the speed limit—because he didn’t see any signs telling him the train would switch tracks. 80 passengers were injured when the train suddenly derailed 5 miles sough of downtown Chicago. In its preliminary report into the incident, the National Transportation Safety Board reports all signals appeared to have been working properly.
US Deaths in Iraq Reach 1,900
The latest casualties in the War in Iraq include a Diplomatic Security agent and three private American security guards, killed in Mosul after their convoy was hit by a suicide car bomber. Near Ramadi, four soldiers attached to the Marines were killed in two separate roadside bombings, and another IED killed an 18th MP Brigade soldier north of Baghdad. The latest insurgent attacks push the US death toll in Iraq, tabulated since the beginning of combat operations in March of 2003, to 1,907 .
Afghan President Calls for Military Change
Afghanistan’s President Hamid Karzai states air strikes are no longer effective against the Taliban and al Qaeda fighters still active in Afghanistan, and that searching homes without government approval should cease. The shift in military strategy calls for US should to focus solely on existing terror bases and support networks. President Karzai believes the US should place emphasis is on breaking up the supply and money routes used to fund the terrorists.
15 Plead Guilty to Killings in Uzbekistan
15 men who participated in the May uprising in eastern Uzbekistan pled guilty to executing hostages and using civilians as human shields during an uprising in the city of Andijan. The rioting ended with a violent government crackdown and 700 citizens and militants people dead. The 15 defendants are alleged to be Islamic extremists and part of a Muslim radical conspiracy to overthrow the government. The various offenses include rioting and murder, charges as many as 106 additional people could face.
