Assault on Iran

2002:
  • August:
    A group of Iranian exiles claim Tehran has secretly manufactured a vast uranium enrichment plant at Natanz, and a heavy water plant at Arak.

  • September:
    Construction work begins at the Bushehr power plant, Iran's first nuclear reactor.

  • December:
    The United States confirms the existence of sites at Natanz and Arak, airing satellite photographs of the facilities on television.

    After the US accuses Tehran of blatantly pursuing weapons of mass destruction, Iran agrees to inspections by the International Atomic Energy Authority (IAEA).
2004:
  • February:
    It is reported that Abdul Qadeer Khan, a key creator of Pakistan's nuclear bomb, sold Iran the technology needed to produce nuclear weapons.

    IAccording to an IAEA report, Iran has experimented with polonium-210, which can be used to trigger the chain reaction in a nuclear bomb.

    Iran agrees to suspend its enrichment program, but it does not

  • March:
    Iran is urged by the IAEA to disclose all aspects of its nuclear program by June 1, 2004.

  • June:
    The IAEA reveals Tehran has been attempting to import magnets for its centrifuges, one example of a continuing refusal to fully disclose its nuclear activities.

  • September:
    Iran claims it will continue the large-scale conversion of uranium ore into gas, going against IAEA orders to halt all plans for uranium enrichment.

    US Secretary of State Colin Powell calls for the UN Security Council to impose sanctions against Iran.

  • November:
    Iran agrees to temporarily halt its enrichment activities while talks with the three European Union states take place.

2005:
  • January:
    IAEA inspectors are permitted inside the ultra-secretive Parchin plant outside of Tehran.

  • April:
    Iran announces it will resume its uranium enrichment process at its facilities in Isfahan.

  • May:
    European states tell Iran that its continuation of uranium conversion will effectively end all trade and economic negotiations.

    Iran vows to delay its uranium conversion activities until the Europeans deliver their revised proposals in July.

  • August:
    A Marine is dead after a homemade bomb explodes during combat operations near Ramadi, Iraq.
