Mission 45 - Force Background & Histories
Afghan Air Strikes

Friendly Forces

The 3/8 was activated on November 1, 1940 in San Diego, California. By 1943, the men of the 3/8 were assigned to the 2nd Marine division and soon began campaigns in World War II in Guadal Canal, Tarawa, Saipan, Tinian and Okinawa. By September of 1945, the 3/8 was deployed to Japan, embarking on a year-and-a-half long occupation of Nagasaki.

After a five-year deactivation period, the 3/8 was reactivated in 1951 at Camp LeJeune, North Carolina, as the 3rd Battalion, 8th Marines assigned to the 2nd Marine Division. In 1962, the 3/8 participated in the Cuban Missile Crisis, followed by the intervention in the Dominican Republic four years later.

In the 1980s, the 3/8 participated in peacekeeping and conflict missions in Lebanon and Liberia; the 90s brought operations in Iraq, Bosnia, Liberia, Central Africa, Haiti and, as a participant of Operation Enduring Freedom, Afghanistan.

The 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment are training the Iraqi Security forces and Police departments in Iraq, ensuring Democracy to millions of Iraqis as an integral part of the voting and rebuilding process. The men and women of the 3/8 stand guard, patrol and protect citizens in the Middle East, contributions to freedom and liberation that resonate worldwide. Back to top

The 2nd Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment was activated in April of 1941. Initially the 4th Battalion, 10th Marines, the unit's first deployment was to Iceland, from 1941 to the spring of 1942. They were in the Pacific theater by that November.

Redesignated at the 2nd Battalion, 10th Marines in July of 1945, the 2/10 participated in World War II battles in Tarawa, Guadalcanal, Saipan, Tinian, Okinawa, and the formal occupation of Japan. By 1946, the 2/10 was relocated to Camp LeJeune, North Carolina, a base that would deploy the unit to serve in the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Intervention in the Dominican Republic in the early and mid-sixties.

The men and women of the 2/10 participated in Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm in 1990 and 1991, respectively. Their experience in the first Gulf war would be repeated in the Millennium, with the deployment to Iraq and participation in the US-led invasion.

The 2/10 currently conducts operations involving the security of residences, vehicles, government structures and military camps. With a fierce loyalty to protecting the Iraqi citizens and their newfound freedom, the 2/10's anti-insurgent operations ensure the future of Iraqi people is one of safety, equality and opportunity.  Enemy Forces

There are dozens of insurgent groups carrying out attacks against coalition forces in Iraq: rebel forces consisting of regime loyalists, nationalistic groups opposed to the US presence, formerly suppressed Islamists, and a variety of jihaddist groups and foreign militias. It is often difficult to separate the various factions as many are closely-aligned al Qaeda groups led by master terrorist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, or even possibly the same group operating under various names.
