Mission 43 - Chronology
Abu Ghraib Prison

7:00 p.m.
50 missiles launch into Afghanistan from positions in the Arabian Sea. Simultaneously, 25 strike aircraft are deployed from the USS Enterprise and the USS Carl Vinson, and 15 B-1 and B-2 bombers are unleashed out of the US base Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean. Long-distance B-2s blast off from Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri.

A second RPG hits directly behind the Marine, damaging his communications radio and wounding him. The insurgents engage the tower with small arms, hand grenades and more RPG fire.

The Marine fires an M-16 rifle at the insurgents, then abandons position with a second soldier by repelling 25 feet down a rope designed to haul equipment in and out of the tower.

The Marines take cover in a fortified bunker just inside of the perimeter wall and maintain position to keep their sights on the doorway at the base of the tower.

Insurgents hidden in a nearby residential area begin a ground assault, targeting several access points and various areas of the compound, including another Marine guard tower where Marines are wounded in a volley of grenades, small arms and RPG fire, and indirect mortar fire.

A grenade hits a recovery team coming to the aid of the wounded Marines. The insurgents move closer to the towers.

Near the southeast tower, insurgents use small and medium arms as cover fire for a suicide car-bomber. As the vehicle speeds toward the perimeter wall, Marines return fire, causing the vehicle to explode before connecting with the tower.

A quick reaction force of Marines and soldiers, Apache helicopters, and artillery counter-fire prevent the insurgency from breaching the perimeter walls and end two hours of battle. 20 Marines are wounded and 50 insurgents are dead.
