Samarra Bank Heist, Part 1

It's Sunday November 30, 2003 and the end of the deadliest month for coalition forces since the start of the war in Iraq. Fifteen people from countries aiding the US-led initiative are killed this weekend alone. Though President Bush declared an end to major conflict months ago, the war is certainly not over for Saddam Hussein's loyalists.

But the ousted dictator will be removed from the daily lives of Iraqis in at least one way. Sweeping currency exchanges are removing Saddam's face from Iraq's money. At banks around the country, citizens are turning in old Iraqi dinars emblazoned with the dictator's image for new bills featuring Babylonian lions, a 10th century mathematician, and other national icons. Symbolic? Yes. But also important because in the days following the fall of Baghdad, looters stole printing presses from the treasury. The new dinars will help fight counterfeiting and the resulting inflation. So US troops in heavily armed convoys are trucking in the stacks of cash needed to replace the nation's entire money supply.

Samarra, a city 60 miles north of Baghdad, is the site of two large currency swaps. Your US troops are called in to guard the cash convoys in transit to two separate banks.

In simultaneous attacks, guerilla forces ambush your transit convoys. One attack is on the east side of the city, and the other is to the west. Some of the attackers are wearing the black garb of the Fedayeen Saddam, an elusive militia group loyal to the former Iraqi leader. In an effort to trap your forces in well-planned “kill sacks”, the insurgents plant roadside bombs and set up makeshift barricades. As the ambush continues, you encounter small arms fire, mortars, and rocket-propelled grenades.

But the guerilla firepower should be no match for your troops. You can counter with small arms rounds, 120mm tank rounds, and 25mm cannon fire from M1A1 tanks. In Part One of this mission, your assignment is to reach the Samarra bank, neutralize the Fedayeen, secure the currency for exchange, and retreat with your forces intact.

As usual, your compass will help in navigating the streets of Samarra. Be aware of enemy fire. It can come from any direction.
