There are some similarities between this map and the earlier Operation Anaconda map. Aside from the obvious – the fact that both missions take place in the Afghan mountains - on the production side, we used the same developer tool to make height maps for the terrain. The new texture set is what gives Osama 2001 a slightly different look.
We created a new texture set for the Tora Bora mission based on the usual reference materials – images and satellite photos. There is some vegetation, but the primary environmental elements are the numerous caves. This complicates the geometry of the map. Rather than creating buildings on relatively flat desert terrain, we had to model hills with holes. As for the impact on gameplay, the cave's complex terrain creates a boxed-in, claustrophobic feel for the player. Also, the mountains atop the caves provide good enemy sniper locations. These two areas present their own challenges for the player; and each requires a different approach.
We were able to flex the engine's muscles for this mission by adding snow -- a first for a Kuma mission. The snow effect does hinder visibility, and the player will have to be extra careful in adjusting to the limited line of sight.
This is the first Kuma mission where the goal is to prevent an enemy from escaping. This element of gameplay necessitated creating a chase scenario with a "lose condition" for when Osama reached a certain location before being killed. Keep in mind there is a significant puzzle element to the map. Clever tactics will help you get your man.
