Galileo Probe Found Hidden Ocean On Europa
Data transmitted from the Galileo spacecraft showed the most detailed images ever taken of Jupiter’s moon Europa with evidence of slush beneath the moon's icy surface. Smaller and many times brighter than our own moon, Europa had tantalized scientists with the possibility that it had a hidden ocean ever since the Voyager spacecraft missions flew past it in 1979. The moon’s -260° F temperature could easily freeze an entire ocean, but scientists believed that warmth from tidal movement caused by Jupiter’s gravity had kept the ocean partly liquid.
Powerful Earthquake Rocked Iran
An earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale struck southeast Iran, killing five and injuring more than a dozen. The quake's epicenter was about 500 miles southeast of Tehran, near Kerman, a city of 250,000 people
Massacre In Arkansas
Two heavily-armed young boys (aged 11 and 13 years) in Jonesboro, Arkansas fired on students at Westside Middle School, killing four students and one teacher and injuring 10 people. The boys hid in the woods near the entrance, pulled a false alarm, and shot at students and teachers as they fled the school. It was the first of five school shootings that year followed by the massacre at Columbine High School in 1999.
FDA Approved Viagra For Use
The FDA announced the approval of Viagra (sildenafil citrate), the first oral pill to treat impotence. Viagra was evaluated in a study of more than 3000 men with varying degrees of impotence associated with diabetes, spinal cord injury, and other causes. Viagra was made by Pfizer and approved by the FDA less than six months after submission.
Apple Computer Unveiled The iMac.
A year after returning to Apple Computer, Steve Jobs revived the struggling company by unveiling the iMac in May 1998. The computer, with its turquoise shell, was an abrupt departure from the boxy design favored by the computer world. And most surprising, all the components, including the optical drive and multiple device ports, were hidden behind the flat-panel screen.
India and Pakistan Joined The Club
In the Rajasthan Desert, India conducted its second series of underground nuclear tests after a 20-year hiatus, sparking a series of nuclear tests by Pakistan. After the two countries went public with their developments, arms talks by the US and Russia stalled. The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists reset the Doomsday Clock to nine minutes to midnight.
Mr. Gates Went To Washington
The United States Department of Justice and 20 state attorneys general filed a massive antitrust case against Microsoft. At issue was Microsoft’s practice of requiring computer manufacturers to license and install the MS browser, Internet Explorer, in order to use Windows 95. This was seen by DOJ as an attempt to monopolize the Internet.
Secret Service Sucked Into The Lewinsky Scandal
A federal judge ruled that United States Secret Service agents must testify before a grand jury in the Monica Lewinsky controversy. Judge Norma Holloway Johnson rejected the Secret Service's attempt to resist Whitewater prosecutor Ken Starr's effort to compel the testimony by saying it would erode the relationship agents need to be near the President
