Jordan Gives Death Sentence to Terrorists
Six men have been sentenced to death by a Jordanian military court for plotting to attack tourist stops during the Millennium celebrations. Four of the six received the death sentence in absentia after eluding authorities since April, when Jordan issued indictments against 28 people. The cell reportedly planned attacks on Mount Nebo and a Christian settlement along the Jordan River said to be the site where Jesus was baptized. The terrorists are linked to Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda organization, and reportedly visited camps belonging to bin Laden in Afghanistan, where they received extensive training in arms and explosives.
Teen Sentenced for Hacking NASA, DoD
16-year-old Internet hacker Jonathan James has been sentenced in federal court to six months in juvenile detention, a sentence that would have been earned him more than a decade in prison if convicted as an adult. James's crimes include hacking into the computer systems of the US Defense Department and NASA. Over a 5-month period, James broke into the systems of 13 computers of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and invaded computers used by the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, a Defense Department agency that monitors threats to the United States from nuclear, biological and chemical weapons, and conventional arms. James was arrested last January after the government traced computer contacts to the family home using technology similar to Caller ID.
US Says Flights to Iraq in Violation of Embargo
Planes from Russia and France flew to Iraq over the weekend, carrying doctors and medical supplies, business executives and soccer players. The US and Britain charge the flights are a violation of the 10-year-old United Nations embargo on Iraq, placed just after the country invaded Kuwait in August 1990. France and Russia have challenged the embargo on Iraq, and insist it does not apply to civilian flights carrying humanitarian aid. Though Iraq claims the embargo has devastated their economy and caused the deaths of hundreds of children, Secretary of State Madeleine Albright said the Iraqis will pump between $16 billion and $20 billion dollars' worth of oil this year, and pointed to the fact that President Hussein and the elite are living very well.
Global Warming Shown in Himalayas
This past century has been the warmest era in 1,000 years, according to researchers studying glaciers. Deep drilling inside a glacier in the Himalayan Mountains shows yet another indication the globe is warming. Scientists say the ancient ice supports other studies that show a rapid melting of mountain ice fields in three continents. The cylindrical specimens of ice are the highest climate record ever retrieved, taken from a glacier more than 20,000 feet high in the Himalayas. The warming revealed by the samples occurred during the late 20th century, and is partially due to human activity.
Colombia Rebels Threaten US Troops
Marxist rebels in Bogotá issued a warning to US soldiers based in Colombia, saying they will be declared a military target if they take any combative role in the nation's long-running war. The threat was distributed over the Internet by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, but issued by the FARC, a 17,000-strong rebel army and Latin America's biggest guerrilla force. The guerrillas have a dominant presence in nearly 40 percent of Colombia. US and Colombian officials have stressed that American troops will not be involved directly in the escalating war against the drug trafficking, or against the guerrillas who may be profiting from the drug trade. Instead, the Americans have been deployed to train special Colombian battalions in counterinsurgency.
Iraqi Jet Over Saudi Desert Challenges US
The State Department says an Iraqi fighter jet flew into Saudi Arabian airspace last week in what is suspected to be an attempt to provoke a confrontation with United States. On the eve of a United Nations summit meeting in New York, the flight symbolizes President Saddam Hussein's determination to test the resolve of the American government, and adds to a list of terms the US and the United Nations has issued that the president has ignored or defied. Until now, President Hussein's refusal to cooperate with a new team of weapons inspectors or with UN humanitarian efforts have caused a great deal of concern.
Defense is Heated At Lockerbie Bombing Trial
Defense lawyers in the Lockerbie bombing trial attacked the testimony of Abdul Majid Giaka, a Libyan double-agent and star witness for the prosecution. During two days of exhaustive cross-examination, the defense team called Giaka a liar, and attacked his character by accusing him of being a black market currency dealer. The Defense lawyers paint Giaka as a greedy opportunist motivated only by a $4 million reward offered by the United States for his information, if it leads to a successful conviction. The defense is operating under the theory that Pan Am 103 was blown up by a Palestinian terrorist cell based in Germany, not Libyans.
Prosecutors Deny Muslims are Singled Out
The office of United States Attorney Mary Jo White has responded to claims her office unfairly singled out Muslims during an investigation into the operations of Osama bin Laden. Bin Laden is the suspected mastermind of the 1998 bombings of two American embassies in East Africa. White's office strongly criticized the charge from Ashraf W. Nubani, the attorney for a man charged in connection with the terrorist attacks, who states his client, Ihab M. Ali, was unfairly investigated for sharing the same religious beliefs as bin Laden. The US Attorney’s office has recently filed new indictments against Ali for perjury and criminal contempt for refusing to testify before grand jury.
