Mission 38 - Forces
Operation Barras

Friendly Forces

The SAS has been engaged in Special Operations for more than 60 years, representing the world’s oldest Special Forces unit. The SAS set the standard for the elite US Delta Force.

SAS troops have an unparalleled level of training in counterterrorist and hostage rescue operations. They’ve been extensively involved in antiterrorist operations across the globe, particularly in Northern Ireland. With extensive experience and grueling training, the SAS is the collaborator of choice to aid countries fighting terrorism. The SAS have trained the FBI's Hostage Rescue Team and schooled other terrorism fighting units from a slew of countries, including France, Germany, Spain, Australia and New Zealand.

First formed in 1941 to operate behind enemy lines in North Africa, the SAS began as a unit with a handful of specialists who demonstrated skills in reconnaissance and the ability to operate covertly behind enemy lines. Today, the SAS participates in large-scale counterterrorism operations all over the world. The SAS was employed in Operation Desert Storm to infiltrate Iraq and secretly locate Scud missile sites, and the SAS were sent to assist the Peruvian government during a lengthy hostage crisis.

Enemy Forces

A maverick gang of insurgents, the West Side Boys are not affiliated with Sierra Leone's most recognized rebel group, the Revolutionary United Front (RUF). The West Side Boys are a combination of released prisoners, ex-trained fighters from the Sierra Leone Army, old members of the RUF, and civilians taken by force to fight for the rebels. They are cunning and ruthless in their campaign against the government and outside peacekeeping forces, but for the most part, it is the citizens who bear the scars of the angry mob.

The West Side Boys have an affinity for alcohol, pot and cocaine, and are rumored to fuel up heavily before raiding villages. Under the influence and disguised in outlandish wigs and flip-flops, the West Side Boys carry out unspeakable deeds on every man, woman and child they encounter. Though their presence and power is strongest in the region of Masiaka, the reputation of mutilation, torture, rape and murder precedes the horrific deeds the West Side Boys carry out in all parts of Sierra Leone.

A favored tactic to spread terror is the use of their machetes. The West Side Boys systematically chop off one or both hands of those they encounter, and it is common for entire arms to be hacked off during overwhelming onslaughts by the West Side Boys. Setting villagers on fire or burning out their eyes is also commonplace. The victims, maimed for life, are fortunate to live at all in a West African region so remote it takes as long as two days for an amputee to receive basic medical care.
