Mission 38 - Chronology
Operation Barras

August 25, 2000
11 British soldiers in Sierra Leone on a peacekeeping mission are kidnapped by local rebels, the West Side Boys.

September 4, 2000
Five British officers are released by the West Side Boys after the relatives of some rebels plea for their surrender. Soon after, the West Side Boys cease communication with family or authorities.

September 10, 2000:
6:16 AM:
Supported by two Lynx helicopters, Special Air Service agents and Paratroopers leave Freetown, Sierra Leone in three Chinook helicopters heading east. Their comrades are held just 50 miles away.

6:40 AM:
As the Chinooks near the villages of Magbeni and Geri Bana, Jordanian United Nations forces and Sierra Leone army troops seal off the areas.

Two Chinooks land paratroopers in the jungle south of Magbeni, where the West Side Boys are hiding. In the same area are confiscated British Land Rovers, one of which is equipped with a heavy machine gun. The paratroopers come under fire as they cross through the jungle.

SAS agents and paratroopers aboard the third Chinook land across the river and infiltrate the huts in the village of Geri Bana, where the hostages are held.

Under fire, the SAS team evacuates all six soldiers of the Royal Irish Regiment and one Sierra Leonean liaison officer from the hut where they are held captive.

7:00 AM:
The hostages are airlifted to Freetown.

8:00 AM:
The West Side Boys in the immediate vicinity are suppressed. 25 rebels are dead; 18 more are captured, including the commander of the West Side Boys. British equipment and vehicles are accounted for and recovered.

4:00 PM:
After mop-up operations, the last paratroopers are evacuated by helicopter
