Mission 25 - Chronology
Najaf: Mahdi Cemetery Battle

April 2004:
US forces arrest al-Sadr aide Mustapha Yacoubi, sparking violent pro-Sadr rallies. At one rally, al-Sadr advises his followers to “terrorize your enemies.” Militias heed the advice and take control of the cities of Kufa, Karbala, Najaf, al-Kut and Sadr City. Al-Sadr threatens suicide attacks if the US attempts to enter Najaf to arrest him.

May 2004:
The Basra representative of Muqtada al-Sadr tells worshippers there are cash rewards for the killing or capture of British or US troops. Female soldiers may be kept as slaves.

Al-Sadr loyalists attack British troops in Basra, assault the governor’s office, and fire RPGs at coalition headquarters. Heavy fighting in Karbala and Sadr City results in the destruction of al-Sadr’s headquarters and the death of 35 Iraqis.

A deal announced by Shiite leaders proposes an end to fighting in the Najaf and Kufa regions. The coalition agrees to suspend offensive operations but not security patrols.

Two separate insurgent attacks on Iraqi police stations leave some 30 rebels dead. One of the attacks involves thirty insurgents. The second is carried out by two men, both of whom are killed by coalition forces.

June 2004:
The First Cavalry suffers three attacks on its Bradley fighting vehicle patrols. Troops take fire from RPGs, AK-47s, and roadside bombs in repeated ambushes in and around Baghdad.

July 31, 2004:
Marines from the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit assume security operations in the city of Najaf.

August 2, 2004:
While conducting a joint security patrol with Iraqi National Guardsmen, the 11th MEU comes under small arms, RPG, and mortar fire near the Najaf Maternity Hospital. The Marines and Iraqi soldiers return fire, killing seven Mahdi Army soldiers. One Marine is wounded.

August 3, 2004:
Marines in Najaf accidentally stray into the neighborhood near al-Sadr's home. Because the area around al-Sadr’s residence had previously been treated as a no-go zone, the Mahdi Army claims the US patrol is attempting to arrest al-Sadr.

August 5, 2004:
Mahdi Army fighters and coalition units engage in a firefight. A Marine helicopter crew escapes unharmed after their chopper is shot down during the morning melee.

The Najaf police station is attacked by the Mahdi Army. Using mortars, rocket-propelled grenades, and gunfire, the battles are fought first by Iraqi policemen. The National Guard forces join after a second attack. US Marines enter the area as backup when the rebels bomb the post a third time. The Mahdi fighters flee the scene and take refuge in and around the Imam Ali Mosque and the adjacent Wadi Al Salam cemetery.

Three brigade combat teams from the First Cavalry are called in to support the 11th MEU in the operation to take the fight to the insurgents in the mosque and the cemetery. US forces embark on 23 days of combat. Four US soldiers will die and hundreds of Mahdi fighters will perish in the battles.
