IED Sweep

Insurgents in Iraq have used improvised explosive devices to kill 136 American soldiers in the past 90 days. Here is a sampling of the death and devastation caused by IEDs last month alone:

  • August 3, 2005:
    14 Marines are killed when a roadside bomb explodes beneath their Amphibious Assault Vehicle during combat operations south of Haditha, Iraq.

  • August 6, 2005:
    Two Pennsylvania National Guard members are killed after a roadside bomb detonates near their HMMWV during convoy operations near Balad, Iraq.

  • August 7, 2005:
    Two New York National Guardsmen are killed in Baghdad, Iraq, when their Humvee is struck by two roadside bombs, followed by a small-arms ambush.

    Another US soldier is killed when an IED detonates near his military vehicle in Taji, Iraq.

  • August 9, 2005:
    Four Pennsylvania National Guardsmen are killed in an enemy ambush that follows a mine explosion in Bayji, Iraq.

  • August 10, 2005:
    A Marine is dead after a homemade bomb explodes during combat operations near Ramadi, Iraq.

  • August 13, 2005:
    A US soldier is killed when an IED detonates near his mounted patrol in Baghdad, Iraq.

  • August 14, 2005:
    A female soldier is killed when multiple roadside bombs detonate near her unit’s convoy operation in Al Asad, Iraq.

  • August 16, 2005:
    One National Guardsman is killed when a roadside bomb explodes near his dismounted patrol in Baghdad, Iraq.

  • August 18, 2005:
    Four US soldiers are killed when a roadside bomb explodes near their HMMWV in Samarra, Iraq.

  • August 20, 2005:
    A Military Police officer is killed by an IED in Baghdad, Iraq.

  • August 21, 2005:
    One Marine dies of wounds caused by an IED he encountered near Al Karmah, Iraq.

    An Army reservist is killed when a roadside bomb detonates near his M916 tractor during convoy operations near Samarra, Iraq.

  • August 22, 2005:
    Two US soldiers are killed when an IED detonates near their Humvee during patrol operations in Samarra, Iraq.

    One Marine is killed when his vehicle strikes a roadside bomb during combat operations near Falluja, Iraq.

  • August 23, 2005:
    A US soldier is killed when enemy forces detonate an IED near his position in Baquba, Iraq.

  • August 25, 2005:
    Four US soldiers are killed after a homemade bomb detonates near their position in Husayba, Iraq.
