Freedom's Heroes: The Road to Baghdad

M1A1 Abrams
M1A1 Abrams
An improved version of the M1, this includes a 120mm smoothbore main gun, more armor, and an overpressure protection system to combat NBC weapons. Used by the Marines, it has a Deep Water Fording Kit, and it's compatible with all US Navy amphibious craft. Designed to replace the M60, it was first loaned to the Marines by the Army during Operation Desert Storm. [show more...]
Factoid: During the First Gulf War, the Abrams was able to hit targets up to 2.5 miles away.

M1A1 Mine Clearing Blade System
M1A1 Mine Clearing Blade System
This is an electrically operated system of blades that attaches to the front of the tank and can clear surface or buried mines up to 6 feet in front of the tank's path without the aid of supporting forces or additional equipment. [show more...]
Adapted for use with both the Abrams and its predecessor, the M60, the system can clear the path on the run without much loss of speed as the tank rolls forward on the battlefield. It's also been used to close up trench lines.

Factoid: One danger is that the system creates large heaps of sand packed with mines in its wake. In one case, a magnetically fused mine slipped out of the pile and detonated in the side of a tank.

Weight: 4.5 tons
Length: 9.6 feet
Width: 14.9 feet
Height: 2.5 feet
Unit Replacement: $64,183

Saboted Light Armor Penetrator (SLAP) Ammunition
Saboted Light Armor Penetrator (SLAP) Ammunition
Developed by the Marine Corps during the 1980s, SLAP ammunition is a .3 inch tungsten core wrapped in a "sabot" or plastic casing giving it a .50 caliber width. Since the total mass of the shot is lighter than normal ammunition of that size, the shot moves faster and is easier to aim. It's designed to operate from M2 machine guns with a liner of Stellite - a hard alloy of cobalt, chromium, and other metals.[show more...]
Factoid: During development, the Marine Corps tested a 7.62 mm version of the weapon, but the shells kept disintegrating and puncturing the barrel of the gun.

Velocity: 3985 feet per second
Maximum effective range: 4921.5 feet
Cost: $7.50 per round

T-55 Tank
T-55 Tank
Introduced in 1958, the T-55 tank has a five-wheeled, tracked chassis, with a low-silhouetted hull and a dome-shaped turret mounted over the third wheel. Its 100mm main gun can do some serious damage, but the cramped conditions inside the vehicle make it hard to load and reload quickly. The T-55 also mounts a 7.62-mm coaxial machine gun. [show more...]
Factoid: With 30 minutes prep time, the crew can outfit the tank to snorkel through up to 16 feet of water, and the equipment can be quickly dumped as soon as it emerges. But the tank is not airtight, so if it's exposed to chemical weapons or radioactive dust, the crew has to suit up.

Crew: 4
Length: 27 ft.
Width: 9 ft.
Height: 7 ft.
Engine: 580 hp
Max Speed: 30 mph

M16A4
M16A4
This 5.56 mm Colt rifle is the fourth generation of the M16, with a removable carrying handle and a rail-mounting system. When the handle is removed, any accessory device with a rail grabber - like an optical sight -- can be mounted on the weapon. [show more...]
It's also designed to use the M203 Grenade Launcher as well as all other US and NATO rifle grenades. The M16A4 is like the A3, but instead of a full auto mode, it fires either semi-auto or in 3-shot bursts.

Factoid: Over 8 million M16 weapon systems have been put in military service throughout the world. According to official Marine Corps statements, there is "no finer service rifle in the world today".
