US Soldier Attacks Commanding Officers
Sergeant Asan Akbar lobbed three grenades into tents housing commanding officers from the 101st Airborne Division at Camp Pennsylvania in Kuwait, killing one soldier and injuring 15. Akbar, an engineer from the 327th infantry, hid in a bunker nearby but was caught.
Attack Was 48 Hours Old When It 'Began'
According to Washington Post journalist Bob Woodward, two days before the president gave the go-ahead to launch the first attacks of the Iraq war, 31 Special Operations teams -- about 300 men - had already begun pouring into western and southern areas of the country where they joined smaller contingents of U.S. Special Forces and CIA paramilitaries already in Iraq. The special operators severed communications, took down observation posts, and positioned themselves to prevent expected chemical and biological weapons strikes or attacks against Israel with Scud missiles.
Record $39 Million Slot Machine Jackpot Won In Las Vegas
A Southern California software engineer in town to watch the NCAA basketball tournament hit the biggest slot machine jackpot in history on Friday and won more than $39.7 million. The winner, whose name was not released, hit the Megabucks Jackpot at the Excalibur hotel-casino.
Doctors Might Be Treating Saddam in Bunker
CIA operatives and Army commandos who are hunting for Saddam Hussein announced that they believed that the Iraqi leader could be in a Baghdad bunker receiving medical attention from military doctors. The assessment came on the day in which Saddam gave his second address on Iraqi TV since the first attack of the war, which U.S. officials said was aimed at "decapitating" his regime.
UFO Could Have Been Electrocuted Cat
Experts said a reported UFO sighting in Norway was probably an electrocuted cat. People in the town of Lardal reported seeing a fire ball explode in the night sky and fall slowly down to earth. But investigators solved the mystery after finding the charred body of a cat at the foot of an electrical mast. They believed the unlucky cat climbed up the mast, touched a live wire, and exploded.
Morocco Offers US Monkeys to Detonate Mine
A Moroccan publication accused the government Monday of providing unusual assistance to U.S. troops fighting in Iraq by offering them 2,000 monkeys trained in detonating land mines.
Pneumonia Cases in Singapore Still Rising
The number of new severe acute respiratory syndrome cases in Singapore rose to 39. The five new patients comprise four hospital staff and one close contact of a patient.
India, Pakistan clash in UN over terrorism
India and Pakistan clashed at the UN Security Council after New Delhi described Islamabad as the 'epicenter of terrorism' and charged it with not living up to its commitments to the international community and the United Nations to stop cross-border terrorism. India's UN Ambassador Vijay Nambiar demanded that the Council's Counter Terrorism Committee identify the countries that violate its resolutions aimed at countering terrorism. Nambiar did not name Pakistan, describing it in his entire presentation as 'one country', but the reference was so obvious that Pakistan Ambassador Munir Akram took floor to deny charges of terrorism against his country.
Light Echo from the Erupting Star Observed
In January 2002, a dull star in an obscure constellation suddenly became 600,000 times more luminous than our Sun, temporarily making it the brightest star in our Milky Way galaxy. The mysterious star faded back to obscurity, but NASA's Hubble's Space Telescope uncovered details that provided astronomers with a CAT-scan-like probe of the three-dimensional structure of shells of dust surrounding an aging star.
