Fallujah Operation al-Fajr
Fallujah, Iraq. November 8, 2004
The ground attack comes after weeks of aerial precision strikes on suspected insurgent and terrorist safehouses, especially those of Jordanian-born militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. Operation Phantom Fury – later renamed Operation al-Fajr (Dawn) by the Iraqi Defense Minister - is the largest military campaign in nearly two years and an epic undertaking in the war in Iraq. A virtual avalanche of Marines, Army soldiers, and Iraqi forces are tasked with blasting their way through each and every structure in the insurgent stronghold.
As US forces strategically prepare for the assault, so, too, does the enemy. Many escape before the well-publicized assault, but more than 3,000 insurgents stay to fight. At their disposal are enormous weapons caches, bomb-making laboratories, networks of safe houses, and series of underground tunnels. But their fortifications are no match for the American military, and it takes just six days for US troops to fight their way across Fallujah – a much quicker operation than expected.
