Mission 16 - Overview
Sadr City

Sadr City, Iraq - May 22, 2004:
1st Cavalry soldiers engage in a bloody, two-day battle throughout the raging region of Sadr-City.

It begins with an ambush. Patrolling coalition forces in Sadr City are suddenly under rocket-propelled grenade fire, hailing down from rooftops and from covert positions. The executors, members of the al-Mahdi army, have more in store for US troops: mortars and at least one anti-aircraft gun. The guerillas are holed up and unseen, but certainly not unheard. Our men are under a barrage of fire in an angry, restless city.

In unrelenting attacks over the next 48 hours, Mahdi militiamen seek refuge in a Mosque, not for the comfort of peaceful prayer, but as a safety zone from the 1st Cavalry’s certain retribution. They are well-armed and patient. And plentiful. More guerillas will emerge all through the city, ensnaring the coalition at a police station, then re-doubling their efforts to kill when military backup arrives.

Today in the Kuma news room is Major General Thomas L. Wilkerson (ret.) and Kuma\War’s Jacki Schechner, here to discuss the tactics of cleric Muqtada al-Sadr and his Mahdi army, and the future of regions like Sadr City. Also joining us is Dante Anderson, Kuma’s Head of Product Development, to fill us in on what it takes to replicate such a complex mission in a playable format. Armed with real-world insight into the factors surrounding the Sadr City battles, you can then lead your team of 1st Cavalry soldiers onto Kuma’s battlefield, where you’ll witness the fury of the Mahdi army firsthand.
