Mission 18 - Design & Production Notes
al Qaeda: The Battle for Mosul

As in all Kuma missions, we designed The Battle for Mosul using satellite imagery of the area and various photographs. If you look in the police station, you will see a map on the wall which is a composite of this satellite imagery and our game map. The two were so close in design that the resulting image required very little tweaking.

Enemy forces used the al Nuri mosque as a vantage point to assault Iraqi National Guardsmen as they attempted to take back the police station. It is at this point the ING requested US support. Because you are taking on the role of a Stryker brigade soldier called in to help, we assume the ING has not cleared the area and there are still insurgents swarming the mosque. While you won’t go in the building, you will definitely have to defend against enemies using it as a vantage point. We designed the mission so your best chance of success will be to clear the police station first, avoiding the front of the building and keeping yourself protected from insurgents across the street.

The Sheik Fatih police station is one of the largest structures we’ve recreated for a single mission and provides players with several tactical situations. First, you’ll have to gain access to the structure. Then you have to clear the structure room by room. The next step is to secure the building and use it as a strategic post for clearing surrounding structures.

We paid particular attention to the interior of the police station so as to maximize the feel of immersion and at the same time make gameplay maneuverability as efficient as possible.

Finally, you’ll have a full range of weapons for use in this mission as will the enemy. We included the RPG, which although it is more suited for attacks on vehicles, it is being used by insurgents in Iraq in close combat scenarios.
